    The game

Exact match point-19 seconds when Aguero was Porto goalkeeper. Nicols error stems from the fact Otamendi feed on Nigel De Jong, the ball is passed directly to the Dutch defender Yaya Toure.

Keen to see Aguero moving into the penalty area, Toure immediately send feedback to the associates. Porto managed to split the defense, Aguero also successfully deceiving goalkeeper Helton. Goals and the City ahead 1-0.

Toure on 16 minutes almost enlarge the benefits of his team if he can pass Helton in position one on one. Less than a minute turn of Porto threatened by Varela, who also failed thanks to the alertness of goalkeeper Joe Hart below.

Another mistake that is made of a back row of Porto makes Aguero had another chance to score. But this time his attempt was stopped crossbar, although he had made it past goalkeeper Helton.

Porto really do not give up even in the left position. However, some opportunities dikreasikan always failed to convert a goal. As a result, until the halftime score 1-0 to the host is not changed.

  • Porto 1-2 Manchester City: Varela,Aguerro score
Manchester City came from behind to beat defending Europa League champions Porto 2-1 in the first leg of their last-32 clash.
Silvestre Varela put the home side ahead on 27 minutes but an Alvaro Pereira own-goal and a tap-in from late substitute Sergio Aguero completed a second-half comeback from Roberto Mancini’s side.

It was a fine response from the away side, who overcame hostile supporters and a fussy referee to stun last year’s winners, who are near impossible to beat at home.

Porto have a fearsome record in Oporto - unbeaten in the league at Estadio Drago for three-and-a-half years although more susceptible against the top continental sides - and they initially showed why by attacking the Premier League leaders from the off, Rolando’s goal-bound header deflected over by Gael Clichy early on.

But before Porto took the lead, the counter-attacking visitors had some good chances themselves as Helton was called into action when the returning Mario Balotelli flicked a free-kick his way, the Brazilian keeper also doing well to keep Samir Nasri’s low shot out when David Silva split the home defence in two.

The opener came on 27 minutes as City were caught napping by a quick free-kick, Hulk drifting wide and hammering in a low, curling cross that left Joleon Lescott and Vincent Kompany for dead, Varela drilling an unstoppable finish into the bottom left.

It was a fine cross and finish but sloppy defending from City, Gareth Barry guilty of turning his back on the initial free-kick, Clichy failing to track Varela’s run inside from the right and Kompany negligent with the Portugal winger.

While Porto had more possession and a greater attacking impetus, City were still dangerous on the break as Balotelli - back from a domestic ban - snatched at a shot when put through by Nasri’s fine pass: he had time and space to take it on, but swivelled in a half-volley that still needed a good stop from Helton.

Balotelli was cutting an isolated figure up front but he was making a nuisance of himself anyway, flicking a header wide of Helton, his defence but also the far post as Clichy showed the better side of his game getting forward.

But on the balance of play the hosts deserved the half-time lead, which they almost added to when Lucho Gonzalez’s goal-bound effort was blocked by Lescott.

So it was unsurprising that City would start the second half with a different strategy, leading from the front and going mighty close when Micah Richards rattled one off the post following one of his trademark rampaging runs from right-back.

Porto were struggling to get past halfway so, when the equaliser came just before the hour mark, it was deserved. It was, however, somewhat fortuitous as Alvaro - harassed by a Balotelli still smarting from an arm in the face by the Uruguayan - tried to intercept a long ball but merely knocked it past his own keeper, who had come to claim it himself.

Having toiled until that point in the second half, Porto responded well with a spell of intense pressure: all they had to show for it was a Hulk free-kick that Joe Hart batted behind for a corner.

The more urgent they became, the happier City were to sit deep and counter.

Indeed, following that Hart save there was little of note for either keeper to do as the match degenerated into a scrappy exchange of fouls and whines, with Porto in particular over-reacting to any challenge as they tried to force the referee to send off City players.

Little, that is, until City won it when - with five minutes remaining - the Porto defence lost track of Nasri, who sent the otherwise quiet Yaya Toure down the left: he could have opted for a near-post finish but, with Helton dragged inside and Aguero unmarked from six yards, the Ivorian played a square ball to the Argentine who rolled the easiest finish of his season into an empty net.

An aggregate lead and two away goals were more than enough for Mancini, who - having already withdrawn Silva - further shut up shop by bringing on Pablo Zabaleta.

There was no chance of a comeback, Porto’s attempts more speculative than penetrating, as City held on to a solid win that sees them clear favourites for the return leg in Manchester next week.

  • Udinese 1-1 Glasgow Celtic: Hooper, Di Natale score
Celtic made an agonising exit from Europe after holding Serie A pacesetters Udinese to a 1-1 Europa League draw in a pulsating contest at the Stadio Friuli.
With both sides committed to attack, Neil Lennon's side could easily have emerged with the win they needed in a game that raged from end to end throughout the evening.

Celtic grabbed a merited lead when Gary Hooper slipped the ball home from close range on 28 minutes only to be undone a minute into two of time added on in the first half as Cha Du Ri nodded into the path of Antonio Di Natale, who slipped the ball home from five yards out.

The visiting goalkeeper Fraser Forster made some exceptional saves in the second period, but Celtic were also left to rue their luck as Cha saw a shot come back off a post in the second half.

They were also denied a clear-cut penalty when Mehdi Benatia handled in the area from Daniel Majstorovic's header.
Udinese - who share top spot in Italy with Juventus - join group winners Atletico Madrid in progressing from Group I, but there was an air of relief among the home bench when the final whistle sounded.

Di Natale showed his menace early on when he lobbed the ball over Forster and over the bar after Scott Brown had needlessly squandered possession, but Celtic looked the brighter side as they carried the game to the home side.

Danilo was fortunate to be awarded a free-kick when he clearly obstructed a rampant Georgios Samaras as he bounded towards goal before Hooper clipped a shot wide from 10 yards out after being played in by Samaras when it looked easier to net.

Celtic were rewarded for the adventure of their play when Samaras' cross broke kindly off Joel Ekstrand for Hooper to score. Celtic looked to have done enough to establish a lead at the break, but Di Natalie showed why he is top goalscorer in Serie A with 10 goals courtesy of an opportunistic finish.

As the second half caught fire in the freezing cold conditions, Forster halted Di Natale from adding to his tally by diving to claw out a thumping shot by the striker from distance before standing tall to save another Di Natale effort moments after Majstorovic had been caught out of position.

Forster then dived to deny Di Natale from netting with a header as Udinese pushed for the second goal they craved to kill off the Scottish side.

With Celtic continuing to push bodies up the park, Kwadwo Asamoah hit a post from close range to the frustration of the home fans after the inspired Forster had blocked Mauricio Isla's header with Charlie Mulgrew beaten in the air.

Celtic maintained their offensive ploy and Cha was left looking bewildered as his volley hit a post before the ball just stopped short of the line after hitting the back of the beaten home goalkeeper Samir Handanovic on 75 minutes.

The visitors had plenty of bodies in the box deep in injury time as Handanovic missed Mulgrew's corner.

But Celtic could not force the ball over the line to come up narrowly short of leaving Udine with three points that would have carried them through to the knock-out stages.

  • Fulham 2-2 Odense BK: Dempsey, Frei score
A last-second goal from Baye Fall saw Fulham throw away a two-goal lead to crash out of the Europa League with a 2-2 draw to OB at Craven Cottage.
Having led through first-half goals from Clint Dempsey and Kerim Frei, Fulham somehow contrived to draw a game they dominated, as a contentiously-taken free-kick by Hans Andreasen and Fall’s last-gasp header saw Wisla Krakow qualify after a 2-1 win over group winners FC Twente.

The result means the Poles, who started the night behind Fulham, take second in Group E.
Fulham controlled the match from the outset as Chris Baird forced a smart save from former Everton reserve keeper Stefan Wessels.

Brede Hangeland was denied a trademark header by both the palm of Wessels and Bashkim Kadrii on the line, with Dembele putting the rebound over from six yards, while Espen Ruud managed to get back to hoof Dempsey’s finish away after the USA international clipped a cool finish over Wessels.

Finally the opener came on 27 minutes, and it was some goal too.

Frei, only 18 but the best player on the park, drilled a low ball in for the otherwise quiet Bobby Zamora, who slipped a deft flick to Dempsey, who in turn drilled a fierce shot past Wessels from the edge of the area.

It was glorious one-touch football and soon afterwards Fulham got a similarly-stylish second.

The co-creator for the first goal, this time Frei was on hand to break his Fulham duck with a cool low finish through the legs of Wessels after his clever diagonal run met the excellent through-ball of Dembele.

Stephen Kelly stung the palms of Wessels with a long-range effort but by this point Fulham were home and dry - Wisla, who had opened the scoring against group winners FC Twente - had conceded an equaliser to leave a four-point gap between second and third.

But it was not all positive for the hosts, with Zamora motioning as if he wished to be substituted at one point, having been the intended recipient of a failed pass. Clearly not injured, the talk will continue of an alleged fall-out with Martin Jol, although there was a chance his rolling-hands motion was intended to signify a proposed tactical switch.

The England striker came out for the second half though, indicating that the problem was either tactical or something easily soothed by Jol.

However, Fulham were a touch sluggish in the second half, failing to create anything as OB sensed an unlikely upset.

The Danes fired a warning shot when full-back Ruud forced a smart low stop from the previously untested Neil Etheridge, given his Fulham debut with Mark Schwarzer injured and David Stockdale unregistered for the group stages after his abortive loan at Ipswich Town.

And the visitors pulled one back, and not without controversy. Baird had given away a free-kick on the right side of the box but, with Fulham’s wall and the referee otherwise preoccupied, they sneakily moved the ball a yard or so inside: Andreasen drove the ball in the gap and, with Etheridge unsighted, it nestled inside the near post.

That spurred the visitors on, although without too much avail as they struggled to get past the home defence. On the one occasion they did get through, a combination of Matthew Briggs and Etheridge keeping Rasmus Falk from reaching Peter Utaka’s cross.

Indeed Fulham had the better late chances as Aaron Hughes headed over from a corner and, deep into injury time, substitute Orlando Sa attempted to dribble all the way when a frustrated Damien Duff was free and awaiting an easy finish.

From that piece of naivety by Sa, OB levelled: the counter attack saw Fulham fail to mark Senegal forward Fall, who got between Hughes and Hangelad to meet a glorious cross from the untracked Ruud which he buried with aplomb.

The equaliser was a sickener but Fulham can at least focus on staying in the Premier League, with their form so far this season unconvincing on all fronts.

Kiev probably paid the price for failing to press home their advantage when they outplayed and outpassed the home team for most of the first hour.

The warning signs were already there before Kiev struck as Begovic saved from Aliyev on five minutes before Aliyev hammered an effort wide of goal on 10 minutes.

Andriy Shevchenko then thumped a shot into the side of a post on 36 minutes with the home fans still reeling from seeing their side - unbeaten in Europe this term - fall a goal behind.

Stoke emerged after half-time looking a bit more like themselves as they were finally rewarded for increasing the tempo against a visiting side suddenly content to sit on their one-goal lead.

Wilson Palacios forced Dynamo keeper Olexander Shovkovskiy to make his first real save of the night on 51 minutes before Pennant saw a blistering effort beat Shovkovskiy only to be hacked off the line by Yevhen Khacheridi.

But Pennant was to be the catalyst for the Stoke revival as he unearthed a sublime cross from out wide that fell perfectly on Jones's head for the goal that delighted the home supporters.

  • Ireland 1-1 Estonia: Ward, Vassiljev scored Republic of Ireland will contest their first major finals since the 2002 World Cup after drawing 1-1 with Estonia in Dublin to complete a 5-1 aggregate win in their Euro 2012 play-off match.
Stephen Ward rammed the ball home from close range on 31 minutes after visiting goalkeeper Pavel Londak failed to hold Kevin Doyle's header to delight a bouncing 51,150 crowd at the Aviva Stadium.

Ireland failed to find the required gusto in the second period and were punished when Estonia equalised on 57 minutes.

Aston Villa's Shay Given seemed to go down in instalments as Konstantin Vassiljev's shot somehow evaded him from 30 yards to prompt wild celebrations among the hardy band of travelling supporters.

It was not enough to stop the party mood in the Irish capital as the home fans celebrated qualifying for a major tournament on Irish soil for the first time.

It was the first time a limited Estonia side had scored a goal against Ireland in four meetings, but was much too little, too late.

Ireland already had one foot in next summer's finals in Poland and Ukraine after drubbing Estonia 4-0 in Friday's first leg in Tallinn.

Ireland last qualified for a European Championship finals in 1988. They last appeared in a finals at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

The win will secure the future of manager Giovanni Trapattoni, whose contract is likely to be renewed before the Italian coach names his 23-man squad for the finals.

The Football Association of Ireland are set to pocket an estimated £6.8 million for qualifying for the finals.

It also eases the pain of the infamous Thierry Henry handball two years ago that helped France rob the Irish of a spot at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

The game was not much to write home about, but was always unlikely to be a classic with the home side heading into the evening with that four-goal lead tucked away.

Robbie Keane could have had two goals in the opening 10 minutes. Londak denied him with a brave stop on seven minutes before the Estonia goalkeeper spilled Damien Duff's shot only to see Keane knock the rebound wide of the target.

There was little of note in the second period with Keane seeing a shot blocked after being played in by substitute Aiden McGeady on 61 minutes while Richard Dunne headed straight at Londak from Keith Andrews's floated delivery moments later.

Estonia midfielder Martin Vunk thumped a shot at the home goal on 73 minutes that Given clawed out before the game petered out amid some joyous scenes in the Irish capital.

  • Fulham 4-1 Wisla Krakow: Johnson double, Duff, Sidwell great-finsih Fulham delivered a goal scoring masterclass as they beat Wisla Krakow 4-1 in their Europa League Group K clash at Craven Cottage, Thursday 03/11/2011.
The Cottagers scored three very different but all exceptional goals to avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture in Poland a fortnight ago and move a step closer to reaching the last 32 of the competition they reached the final of last year.

Damien Duff opened the scoring after just five minutes with perhaps as fine a goal as he has scored in a Fulham shirt. Unperturbed, Wisla levelled four minutes later via Andraz Kirm's deflected effort.

On the half-hour mark, Andy Johnson restored Fulham's lead with an exquisitely struck volley on the turn of which striker in the world would be proud.

Johnson bagged his second and Fulham's third in the second half via a slick free-kick routines carried out to precision.

Substitute Steve Sidwell then added a scrappy fourth with a little over 10 minutes remaining.

    The Game

Perhaps given the bad blood between these sides from their first meeting, which Fulham lost 1-0 after having Moussa Dembele controversially sent off early on, the atmosphere inside the ground was vociferous right from the off.

With the high tempo on the pitch whipping up the home crowd and Wisla's already intimidating travelling support into a frenzy, this usually genteel corner of west London into a veritable cauldron. There were reports of too many people inside the ground and the police struggling to keep matters under control - at one point smoke from flares billowed on to the pitch and made visibility very poor - but it helped make for an intoxicating spectacle.

Duff got things rolling on the pitch when he and Bobby Zamora sparked a swift counter-attack with a one-touch move that saw the ball find its way to Johnson. The Fulham forward surged down the right before squaring the ball back inside for Duff to fire first-time past goalkeeper Sergei Pareiko.

Soon enough, Wisla were on terms when an quick break initiated by Gervasio Nunez - the man accused of conning the referee into sending Dembele off in the reverse fixture. The ball broke for Kirm inside the box, and his strike deflected off a Fulham defender and rolled past the helpless Schwarzer.

Johnson had the ball in the the Wisla net in Fulham's very next attack, only for the goal to be disallowed for a marginal but correct offside decision. However, the striker who once considered playing international football for Poland - as he qualified through his Polish grandfather - was not to be denied on the half-hour mark.

A second corner in quick succession came out to Danny Murphy on the opposite flank. The Fulham skipper clipped the ball back into the box and Johnson swivelled to hit a powerful volley on the turn that fizzed and swerved before crashing in off the inside of the post.

Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer was called into action soon after the break, saving efforts from Michael Lamey and Lukasz Gargula, before Johnson took the game away from Wisla as the hour mark approached.

Murphy played a free-kick into the feet of Zamora, who guided it into the path of Johnson's run down the right of the area. The striker lifted the ball over the keeper for his 11th goal of the season, eight of those coming in this competition.

Wisla still made a good fist of fighting their way back into the game, with Ivica Iliev and Dragan Paljic sending efforts over the bar, but Sidwell made it four after coming off the bench for Murphy.

The midfielder saw his header tipped on to the bar after a short corner routine, but he reacted quickest to fire home the loose ball from a yard out.

Considering that these two sides had played 45 games between them this season coming into the match, they both produced a fine spectacle that is a credit to an often maligned competition.
