  • Aston Villa 1-1 Sunderland: Carew, Campbell scores

Sunderland dented Aston Villa's bid for fourth spot in the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Villa Park, On Wednesday 24/03/2010.

Sunderland took the lead midway through the first half through Fraizer Campbell only for John Carew to draw Villa level eight minutes later.

Villa's Emile Heskey limped off after only 14 minutes with an Achilles injury, giving Martin O'Neill an early headache: he replaced the England striker with Nathan Delfouneso.

The Black Cats should then have gone ahead when Darren Bent was harshly adjudged offside after beating Brad Friedel all ends up.

But he had better luck soon after. Bent combined with Kieran Richardson on the halfway line to release Campbell, who outpaced the Villa defence and calmly lifted the ball over the advancing Freidel.

At the other end Craig Gordon was the busier of the two goalkeepers, making two fine saves from Carew as well as a diving stop to deny James Milner.

The Norwegian was not to be denied for long. Milner lead a Villa breakaway and fed Ashley Young on the right; the England winger sent a superb cross to the far post where Carew had the easiest of tap-ins.

Villa had chances to win it near the end, Delfouneso heading wide when well-placed and Steve Sidwell seeing an effort balloon over the crossbar.

Sunderland will be the happier of the two teams while Villa boss O'Neill will know it was a chance missed in their quest for the fourth Champions League place.
