  • Sunderland 2-1 Burnley: Darren Bent scored

Sunderland beat Burnley 2-1 at the Stadium of Light to leave the Clarets four points from Premier League safety.

Fraizer Campbell and Darren Bent scored first-half goals for the home side in a match that they dominated.

Burnley grabbed a goal back through Steven Thompson and pressed for an equaliser in the last 10 minutes but a draw would have been more than they deserved.

Campbell opened the scoring on 23 minutes, stabbing home Alan Hutton's cross from the right after good work from Kieran Richardson.

Steve Bruce's side then piled on the pressure with Bent and John Mensah both going close, before the excellent Kenwyne Jones hit the post.

Moments after Jones had hit the post, Bent made it two on 41 minutes as he volleyed home after Campbell had broken the offside trap to head back across the goal after a lovely through ball from David Meyler.

Burnley did grab a goal back in the second-half against the run of play as Thompson fired home after the Sunderland defence backed off him to set up a tense finale.

Sunderland posed a threat early on as Burnley's high defensive line was caught out by a through ball from Steed Malbranque which found Bent racing away with Leon Cort trailing in his wake. Bent's cross from the by-line took a deflection, and the wrong footed Brian Jensen did well to get a hand to it and push it over the bar.

The Wearsiders threatened Jensen's goal on a number of occasions. First Mensah's header from a Jordan Henderson free-kick was well saved by the big Dane, before Jones hit the post after controlling a corner from Richardson and being given the space to turn and shoot.

The hosts' pressure paid off though as Bent dropped deep and played the ball to the impressive Hutton, whose first time cross was stabbed home by Campbell.

Hutton was getting forward at every opportunity and his cross from deep almost saw Bent make it two as he beat Cort and Michael Duff to the ball but could only direct his header wide of the post.

From a contentious free-kick Mensah volleyed high and wide after Cort inadvertently flicked the ball on, however Sunderland were not to be denied.

They eventually made it two when Meyler chipped a lovely ball over the top of the Burnley defence for Campbell who headed across goal for Bent to volley in left footed past Jensen.

The second-half followed a similar pattern with Sunderland dominating proceedings. Jones tested Jensen on a number of occasions and Hutton beat four Burnley defenders before seeing his cross cut out.

Burnley failed to test Craig Gordon, and were limited to shots from distance, however with 10 minutes remaining they pulled a goal back as the Sunderland defence switched off and allowed Thompson space to run into and the striker drilled into the bottom left hand corner.

That goal made sure that the remaining minutes were a tense affair, but Sunderland were never really troubled and with Hull's point at Birmingham, Burnley have now slipped to second from bottom.
