  • AJ Auxerre 2-1 Ajax: Sammaritano, Alderweireld, Langil scored

A clinical Auxerre made Ajax pay for wasted chances, winning 2-1 to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the knock out rounds of the Champions League, on Wednesday 03/11/2010, at Stade Abbé Deschamps.
After Frederic Sammaritano's deflected opening goal, Auxerre defended for much of the game, before Ajax eventually drew level through Toby Alderweireld's header.

However, the French side grabbed the winner in the last 10 minutes when Steeven Langil latched onto a quick free kick and coolly slotted home.

The win sees Auxerre still in with a chance of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League or for the Europa League, but they are still bottom on three points.

Ajax will rue their missed chances as with Milan and Real Madrid drawing they missed their chance to go second in the group.

The visitors dominated possession in the first half but failed to register a single shot on target, whereas Auxerre scored with their first attack through Sammaritano's deflected effort.

The midfielder, who had been converted to a forward for the night as Auxerre struggled with injuries, latched onto Julien Quercia's knock down and saw his shot deflect off Jan Vertonghen and spin past Maarten Stekelenburg into the back of the net.

Ajax very nearly hit straight back when Luis Suarez picked out the run of Demy de Zeeuw whose first time effort whistled just narrowly past the post with Olivier Sorin beaten.

However, the French side defended well and grew into the game as the half wore on finishing in the ascendancy in the last five minutes as Stekelenburg looked uncomfortable at coming to collect crosses and corners.

It was all Ajax from the beginning of the second half though. De Zeeuw and then substitute Siem de Jong going close before Suarez saw a header crash off the crossbar.

Eventually, Ajax made their pressure pay and in the 79th minute Alderweireld connected with Suarez's corner and the Dutch side were well worth their equaliser.

However, just two minutes later and they were again behind, guilty this time of switching off. Auxerre substitute Kamel Chafni was brought down on the right, and the Ajax defence were caught unawares when Chafni's quickly taken free kick found fellow substitute Langil running in behind the Ajax defence.

Langil kept his cool and put it through Stekelenburg's legs and the French side clung on for the win.
