  • Wigan 1-0 Wesbrom: Moses great-strike

    Victor Moses's 70th-minute strike was enough to secure Wigan a 1-0 victory over West Brom at the DW Stadium in the Premier League.

    A swift counter-attack from the Latics saw Moses place a shot past Baggies goalkeeper Scott Carson, following good hold-up play courtesy of Hugo Rodallega, to end Wigan's dismal run of form and move them out of the relegation zone.

    Wigan boss Roberto Martinez had sent on Moses at the start of the second-half to spark life back into his team following a drab, goalless opening 45 minutes, and the young winger's industry proved to be the perfect tonic.

    Just after the break, Moses fed the ball through to Charles N'Zogbia running through the centre (admittedly when Tom Cleverley darting down the right flank would have been the better option), but the French winger failed to get a shot away.



    But 19 year-old Moses more than made up for this earlier indecision with the winning goal delivered 20 minutes from full time.

    This game had seen two of the league's out-of-form teams come together. Wigan had failed to win in their last five Premier League matches and had struggled for goals.

    Meanwhile, West Brom have a dismal Premier League away record in which they haven't recorded a win in three away matches, conceded 15 away goals this season already and failed to register at least one away clean sheet thus far.

    With all that in mind, the first-half was a tentative affair. Neither team really looked to take the initiative, as the danger of potential defeat outweighed the risk of pushing forward for sought-after glory.

    Wigan did start the brighter of the two teams - Cleverley looking particularly effective down the left flank, but the 21 year-old was unable to deliver that final telling ball into the box on a number of occasions.

    The Latics' best chance of a drab first 45 minutes saw N'Zogbia combine with Rodallega in the 5th minute. But the Frenchman, having accepted the return pass, failed to test Carson in the West Brom goal.

    West Brom began to get into their stride as the half progressed. Peter Odemwingie, who had only returned to first-team action in the midweek draw at West Ham, showed great endeavour when ghosting into attacking positions in the final third, but the delivery from James Morrison and Jerome Thomas was lacking on several instances.

    Instead, the only real shots at goal in the first-half came courtesy of West Brom's Steven Reid (in the 14th minute) and Wigan's Jordi Gomez (in the 18th minute). Both efforts, from around 25 yards out, were blazed harmlessly over the crossbar.

    The game opened up in the second-half but, having fallen behind, Roberto Di Matteo's men were not able to muster an equaliser.

    In fact, the Baggies were indebted to some wayward shooting from Wigan substitute Franco Di Santo in the 82nd minute to keep them in the match.

    Cleverley played in Di Santo, who was running back from an offside position, but the striker's hurried turn-and-shot when unmarked failed to test Carson, with the goal at the Argentine's mercy.

    Right at the death, Wigan keeper Ali Al-Habsi saved point-blank from a Marc-Antoine Fortune strike, but the Latics held on for a much-needed win which came at the expense of a mis-firing West Brom side.
