Westbrom 3-2 Blackpool: Odemwingie great-double
Peter Odemwingie grabbed a late winner as West Brom defeated Blackpool 3-2 in a Premier league thriller at The Hawthorns.
The Nigerian scored a brace, including an 87th minute winner as West Brom ended a run of six straight defeats to beat Blackpool.
In a game of many chances, Odemwingie volleyed home a deserved winner when Craig Cathcart allowed a long ball from Paul Scharner to bounce over his head.
In a thoroughly entertaining first half, the Tangerines nearly took the lead in the second minute. DJ Campbell, twisted and turned inside the West Brom area and poked a shot just inches wide of Boaz Myhill's right hand post.
David Vaughan then deservedly put Blackpool ahead in the 11th minute. West Brom failed to clear an in swinging Stephen Crainey corner, and the ball broke to Vaughan on the edge of the area. The Welshman controlled the ball with his right foot before switching onto his left and curling a delightful effort into the top left hand corner.
West Brom almost equalised in the 27th minute. Jerome Thomas swung in a cross from the left which Chris Brunt met on the volley at the far post, but with it looking like a certain goal, Stephen Crainey got a terrific block to deflect it a yard wide.
But the Baggies didn't have to wait much longer for an equaliser. In the 37th minute Graham Dorrans in swinging right footed cross from the left allowed the unmarked Odemwingie to beat the Blackpool offside trap, control the ball, and then side foot past the stranded Richard Kingson. It was just desserts for what was a spirited first half fight back by West Brom.
The second half begun much like the first with DJ Campbell missing another guilt edged chance for the Tangerines.
Charlie Adam played a great low through ball to Campbell, who, clean through had only the keeper to beat but rolled the ball an inch wide of Kingsons right hand post, when it had seemed easier to score.
West Brom rubbed salt into the former Birmingham City striker's wounds by going straight up the other end and scoring. Jerome Thomas jinked his way to the Blackpool by line before drilling in a dangerous ball across the six yard box that goalkeeper Kingston could only parry straight to Morrison, who tapped in from two yards out.
With West Brom on top, Goal scorers Odemwingie and Morrison both missed great chances to give the Baggies a much needed two goal cushion. In the 63rd minute Odemwingie was put clean through by Morrison, but the Nigerian international could only fire straight at the out rushing Kingson.
Odemwingie was put through again just 5 minutes later, this time he unselfishly squared to Morrison, but the Scottish midfielder blazed over from 12 yards out with the goal at his mercy.
Just when it looked like West Brom were going to end their losing streak with a comfortable win, Gary Taylor Fletcher equalised in the 80th minute. Vaughan's precise pass down the right set substitute Matt Phillips free, and his first time low cross found Taylor Fletcher to tap in at the far post.
But just when Blackpool thought they had snatched an unlikely point, Odemwingie popped up in the 87th minute to grab the winner.
The drama didn't end there though, as Brett Ormerod missed from two yards out after a goal mouth scramble had seen Campbell's scrappy effort cleared off the line with just a minute of normal time remaining.
The Baggies held on to claim a vital first win since early December and move up to 14th in the Premier League table.
