  • Wigan 0-1 Newcastle United: Amoebi scored

Newcastle United moved back up into the top half of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.
Shoela Amoebi scored the only goal when Wigan entertained Newcastle United at DW Stadium on Sunday 02/01/2011.
The Magpies were without the injured Andy Carroll, but Shola Ameobi stepped into the breach by scoring his seventh goal of the season to give Alan Pardew's side the lead in 19 minutes.

Newcastle's fourth away win of the season was the perfect tonic following back to-back defeats over the Christmas period and lifts them up to 10th in the table on goal difference. Wigan remain just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

    The game

    # 90+2' Tiote smuggles the ball out of the corner to Jose Enrique, who comes inside and curls a shot over the bar!
    # 90' Newcastle break and it's Best haring forward. He's got Routledge in support but he knocks it past Caldwell prods it past Al Habsi... and wide of the target!
    # 68' It almost costs Wigan a goal... Taylor heads against bar! Both Newcastle centre-backs have now hit the woodwork.
    # 43' Jose Enrique plays a great ball down the left channel for Gutierrez to chase... Al Habsi is quick off his line to make the save!
    # 40' Barton floats the corner to the edge of the box for Fabricio Coloccini to head... off the bar! Al Habsi was rooted to the spot! That move straight from the training ground almost came off!
    # 36' Alcaraz meets the corner and his looping header comes back off the bar! Rodallega reacts quickest but hooks his effort over the goal!
    # 19' GOAL!! Newcastle's corner is cleared all the way back to Harper. It's launched back upfield and Wigan fail to clear. Barton's shot across goal is saved by Al Habsi but Ameobi is on hand to tap in the rebound!
    # 15' Diame marauds down the left before picking out Cleverley with the outside of his boot, only for the on-loan midfielder to steer his effort over the bar! It was an awkward height for the youngster, but he could have tested Harper.
    # 5' Ben Watson's delivery fromt he free-kick is poor but the rebound falls to Tom Cleverley who bends in a decent effort... saved by Steve Harper! The returning keeper passes his early test!
    # 2' Danny Simpson swings in a great cross to the far post for Shola Ameobi... headed over the bar! Ameobi did well to lose Ronnie Stam, but his header should have at least tested Ali Al Habsi.
