  • Sunderland 2-3 Westbrom: Bardsley free-kick, Odemwingie,Mulumbu, Scharner scored

West Bromwich Albion took a huge stride towards Premier League safety after beating Sunderland 3-2 at the Stadium of Light plunging the north-east side into a relegation battle, on Saturday 09/04/2011.
Paul Scharner's goal with 18 minutes left decided this pulsating game which had seen Sunderland take the lead twice.

The result continued West Brom's unbeaten run that now stretches to seven games and but includes just three wins.

Sunderland's terrible form continues and Steve Bruce's men are in danger of being sucked into a last-gasp relegation fight.

Nicky Shorey's own goal after nine minutes opened the scoring and was against the early run of play.

Asamoah Gyan's cross from the left was meant for the marauding Ahmed Elmohamady in the goal area.

Instead defender Shorey got across his man to defend the ball but could only divert an unstoppable header past his Scott Carson in the West Brom goal.

But West Brom did not drop their heads an continued to press and pass.

This was rewarded when Peter Odemwingie poked home his 11th goal of the season to bring the sides level.

Jerome Thomas's cross from the left was deflected up into the air. Simon Cox won the header inside the penalty area and Odemwingie stuck out a foot to turn to ball past Simon Mignolet for 1-1.

But the best of the half was left to Phil Bardsley just two minutes later.

Gyan was fouled by Paul Scharner 25 yards from goal - although it looked like he won the ball.

Lee Cattermole took the free-kick short and Bardsley rifled home the free-kick to send the Stadium of Light into raptures.

West Brom levelled up matters for a second time inside 10 minutes of the second half. Youssouf Mulumbu toe-poking home from eight yards.

With just more than 20 minutes to go Simon Mignolet made sure the scores remained level after producing a fantastic save from Jonas Olsson.

Chris Brunt swung over a free-kick and the defender met the ball from eight yards out and the Belgian shot-stopper flung out a left hand to deflect the ball behind.

And the match was decided after a flowing West Brom move that got the finish it deserved.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Odemwingie, Reid and Mulumbu combined before Odemwingie crossed for Scharner to side-foot into the bottom corner and condemn Sunderland to an eighth game without a win.

Danny Welbeck had a late chance to grab a vital point for Sunderland but he could only volley over from 20 yards after Gyan's headed flick.

Sunderland are due to travel next to St Andrews to play Birmingham City while West Bromwich Albion will next entertain Chelsea at The Hawthorns on April 16.
