  • Aston Villa 1-1 Wigan: N'Zogbia great-finish, Young free-kick

Wigan boosted their hopes of Premier League survival by holding Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw at Villa Park, Saturday 07/05/2011.

Roberto Martinez's side scored with their first serious attack of the match as Victor Moses sliced open the Villa defence with a penetrating run on 10 minutes.

He slid the ball into the path of Charles N'Zogbia, who clipped the ball expertly beyond the home goalkeeper Brad Friedel from inside the area.

Villa were level six minutes later after Ben Watson foolishly brought down Ashley Young around 25 yards from goal.

Young picked himself up off the ground to slide a free-kick beyond the visiting keeper Ali Al Habsi, who was slugging in diving to his left in failing to half the shot as it nestled in his net.

Al Habsi atoned for that error when he made a superb block to prevent Emile Heskey's volley from hitting the net midway through the half.

Heskey was fortunate to avoid a red card when he seemed to bump into the back of referee Mike Jones after he was taken out late by Antolin Alcaraz.

Heskey was replaced by Marc Albrighton at the break after apparently becoming involved in a heated debate in the tunnel at half-time.

Wigan easily saw out the second period, but Al Habsi was forced to make a superb block from Darren Bent on 81 minutes.

Wigan are out of the relegation zone and are one point ahead of third-bottom Blackpool, who face a daunting trip to face Tottenham later on Saturday.
