  • Galatasaray 3-0 Liverpool: Baros double, Elmander superb-strike

Milan Baros scored twice against his former club as Liverpool slumped to a 3-0 loss at the hands of Galatasaray at the Turk Telekom Arena.
New arrival Johan Elmander, previously at Bolton, scored a sensational third late on as a makeshift Reds team struggled in humid conditions.

With several big names not available to Kenny Dalglish, there was a chance for midfielders Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen and Jonjo Shelvey to impress in rare starts for the club.

But they did not take their chance, and were immediately on the back foot.

Baros wastefully missed a one-on-one chance in the first moments of the match, but atoned for that eight minutes in by finishing a slick move with a composed strike.

The Czech doubled the advantage with five minutes of the first-half remaining, popping up at the far post to nod a corner past new arrival Alexander Doni in the Liverpool goal.

Liverpool were reduced to long-range efforts, with Andy Carroll a largely isolated presence up front.

Dalglish changed to a 4-4-2 at half-time with the introduction of Dirk Kuyt, and it led to an improved spell from the visitors.

They could not turn their pressure into goals, though Alberto Aquilani went closest after a well-worked move ended with Kuyt's low cross into his path - but Ufuk Ceylan made a good stop.

The game, disrupted by numerous substitutions and drinks breaks in the Turkish heat, was petering out into a draw until a late strike from Elmander.

Liverpool lost possession carelessly in defence, and the ball was chipped the way of the Swede, who volleyed in off the post from 25 yards.

It capped a dour night for Liverpool, though they can take solace from the fact that they have several star names still to return before the start of the season.
