  • Manchester United 6-0 NY Cosmos: Scholes superb-strike, Welbeck double

Scholes scored with his remark style on his testimonial match against New York Cosmos, at Old Trafford, Friday 05/08/2011.

Scholes’s ninth minute trademark strike set United on their way to a goal-scoring spree. Wayne Rooney later scored before Anderson, Danny Welbeck and a Mame Biram Diouf brace completed the rout.

The makeshift Cosmos team, who actually only have an Under-23 squad, kicked off the game and passed the ball around superbly – looking like a side that had played together for years.

However, quite unsurprisingly they struggled when going forward as a number of their players were on different wavelengths having not played together before.

The hosts soon got into the game and could have taken the lead within the first three minutes. Rooney slid a neat ball between the defence into the path of the the onrushing Nani. The Portugal winger shot from a tight angle but was unable to beat Brad Friedel in the Cosmos net.

The Reds continued to dominate possession and created another very good chance. Dimitar Berbatov found himself with some space in the box before turning with the ball to shoot at goal. The effort was fired straight at Friedel from 10 yards which enabled the keeper to get a hand on it – palming it away to safety.

Finally, after a considerable amount of pressure, United took the lead. And it was only going to be one man.

Ashley Young’s corner was played short, eventually finding its way to Scholes who was standing 30 yards from goal. The midfield Maestro took one touch before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the top left-hand corner, leaving Friedel with no chance.

The Old Trafford faithful erupted into a chorus of “Fergie, sign him up…” as the hosts continued to play free-flowing football following the goal.

A number of United players had half-decent chances to double the lead but Friedel was on hand to keep the scoreline down.

However, he was unable to anything on the half-hour mark as the Reds doubled their lead through a penalty.

Young burst down the left before cutting inside and flicking the ball past Yannik Reyering. The German defender missed the ball but caught the legs of the England winger.

Everybody looked at Scholes to take the penalty but the always-shy midfielder waved his hands in refusal and gave the spot-kick to Rooney.

The England striker stepped up and smashed the ball in-off the crossbar, giving Friedel no chance.

United made a host of changes in the second half, conserving the energy of many first team players ahead of Sunday’s charity shied match.

Only six second-half minutes had elapsed when the home side notched their third of the evening.

Substitute Anderson cut in from the right, playing a neat one-two with Nani on his way into the penalty area. The Brazilian latched onto his Portuguese team mates return ball and fired into the far corner from 18 yards.

United were cruising on the hour mark as they scored their fourth. Another substitute, Danny Welbeck, who spent last season on loan with Sunderlan, showed the vast improvements he’s made in the previous 12 months by clinically finishing.

Tom Cleverley’s cross from the left wasn’t cleared. The Cosmos defenders were hesitant in putting the ball to safety which allowed Welbeck to rush onto the ball and calmly side-foot into the net from 12 yards.

Another of United’s youngsters, Mame Biram Diouf then came off the bench and instantly made an impact.

Cleverley chased down what appeared to be a lost cause before sliding the ball infiehttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifld to Welbeck. A gap opened up for the England Under-21 international to shoot but he unselfishly squared for Diouf. Taking one touch, the Senegalese forward smashed past substitute Cosmos keeper Chad Calderone into the back of the net.

The 23-year-old has his second of the game four minutes later after being released down the right flank. He bore down on goal and cut inside, giving himself a decent angle to work with, before again calmly slotting past the keeper.
