  • Newcastle 2-1 Everton: Heitinga own-goal, Taylor sublime-finish, Rodwell header

Ryan Taylor scored one of the goals of the season as unbeaten Newcastle moved up to second in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Everton in a frantic contest at St James' Park.

Taylor thumped home a stunning volley from outside of the Everton box on 29 minutes after Jonny Heitinga had scored an unfortunate 12th-minute own goal to gift the home side the lead.

Jack Rodwell headed home from close range in stoppage time in the first half to give Everton fresh hope, but despite dominating large swathes of the second period a leggy Newcastle held on for a win that extends Alan Pardew's side's remarkable start to this season.

They are second in the Premier League table with 25 points from 11 games, three points behind leaders Manchester City, who visit QPR later on Saturday.

Manchester United have 23 points from 10 games, will go back above Newcastle into second spot if they beat Sunderland at home.
