  • Wigan Athletic 1-1 Blackburn Rovers: Rodallega's strong header

Wigan fought back to gain a precious point at the DW Stadium after a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.

Hugo Rodallega's header seven minutes into the second half cancelled out Benni McCarthy's volleyed opener for Blackburn after 30 minutes.

Both teams could have snatched all three points in a pulsating stoppage time but they had to settle for a draw.

McCarthy scored his first Premier League goal of the season after Ryan Nelsen headed Keith Andrews' free-kick across goal to the South African who volleyed, right-footed, into the back of the net with Chris Kirkland in the Wigan goal well beaten.

Both sides had chances to win the game in a second-half that really got the crowd going. Steven Nzonzi fired wide after a McCarthy backheel and N'Zogbia and Jason Scotland wasted good chances for Wigan.

McCarthy should have won the game for the visitors with eight minutes remaining but his bicycle kick was superbly blocked by Kirkland from six yards.

The drama continued into stoppage time as Bramble cleared a Samba header off the line before Jordi Gomez found himself well-placed with seconds left but opted to pass instead of shoot.

The result sees Wigan remain dangerously close to the relegation zone with Blackburn just a point better off.
