  • Wigan 2-0 Wolverhampton: Gomez great free-kick, Henry red-card

    Goals from Jordi Gomez great fre-kick and Hugo Rodallega gave Wigan a comprehensive 2-0 win against 10-man Wolves in their Premier League encounter at the DW Stadium.
    Karl Henry was shown a straight red card for a horrendous, staggeringly late challenge on Gomez after just 11 minutes, which saw Wolves promptly shrink back and defend obdurately thereafter.

    Gomez made Henry further rue his reckless foul with a touch of class required to break the deadlock as the Spaniard unfurled a sublime free-kick in the 65 minute.

    Wolves were forced out of their shell, and Wigan capitalised on the holes left at the back: Charles N'Zogbia slipped the ball through to Rodallega, who applied the finishing touch to put the game to bed.

    Franco Di Santo recovered from an ankle injury to assume the lone striker berth for Roberto Martinez's side, while Michael Mancienne displaced David Jones in midfield for the visitors.

    Wolves have committed by far the highest number of fouls in the Premier League this season, and Mick McCarthy's side hardly tempered their ever burgeoning reputation as Henry was dismissed early on.



    The midfielder lunged in recklessly on Gomez in what was an entirely unnecessary two-footed challenge which speared his opposite number down on to the turf in alarming fashion.

    Wigan did fashion two good chances either side of the break, with both falling to Gomez, which proved unfortunate for Martinez.

    Gomez should have capitalised on Marcus Hahnemann having been caught in no man's land from Charles N'Zogbia's cross out on the right, but he planted a tame free header wide with the goal gaping. The midfielder then drove a low shot straight at Hahnemann following a slick exchange with Rodallega just after half-time, but the American goalkeeper parried the ball wide brilliantly expertly.

    The Latics have converted just three per cent of their shots into goals this season, and did not look like mustering a breakthrough, before Gomez stepped up to take a free kick from the edge of the Wolves box.

    The Spaniard crisply curled a stunning strike over the visitors' wall and beyond Hahnemann into the far corner of the net, and finally Wolves were forced to alter their approach.

    Di Santo, who was largely ineffectual in attack, showed a glimpse of his talent with wonderful vision to spot Hahnemann off his line with a volley from 35 yards. The keeper recovered to concede a corner, but it was enterprising play from the Argentine.

    Wolves were left exposed as McCarthy introduced strikers Marcus Bent and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, and Wigan exploited the gaps: N'Zogbia threaded a precise through ball to Rodallega, who rounded off his side's win with a clinical finish.

    Wigan had made their worst start to a Premier League campaign after six games, but Martinez's side moved three points clear of Wolves and the bottom three with their victory.
