  • Blackpool 2-2 Fulham: Zamora, Etuhu great-finish A Luke Varney-inspired Blackpool came from a goal down to hold Fulham to a 2-2 draw in the first Premier League game at Bloomfield Road.

Dickson Etuhu's late equaliser meant that the Tangerines were denied a fairytale win but they will take confidence from a strong second half recovery and a impressive debut for Varney, who scored one and was involved in the other for the Seasiders.

Bobby Zamora's 34th minute header gave Fulham a 1-0 lead going into the break but a revitalised Blackpool came out for the second half and played at a phyical intensity that troubled the Londoners.

Varney, only signed from Derby on Friday, was a constant irritant to Fulham and it was his 71st minute shot that John Pantsil, scrambling to clear, turned into his own net.

Five minutes later Varney picked up a through ball, took a touch, and fired confidently to the far post and beyond David Stockdale in the Fulham goal.

But Blackpool were denied victory when Fulham's Etuhu burst down the pitch, picked up Moussa Dembele's brilliant pass, and calmly lofted over Matthew Gilks to ensure the teams shared the points.

The game swung into Blackpool's hands when Zamora, a handful to Blackpool all afternoon, had to be withdrawn after picking up an injury sustained during an aerial challenge in the 59th minute.

The watching Fabio Capello seemed as concerned as Mark Hughes, who replaced him with Clint Dempsey, but Blackpool gained a psychological lift after Zamora hobbled off.

Fulham, who had looked largely untroubled at the back throughout the first half, lost the focus of their attacks after Zamora departed and looked somewhat toothless with Dempsey leading the line.

Dembele, who was impressive throughout, was unable to link as well with the Texan as he had with Zamora and, ultimately, this Fulham performance highlighted just how important the England man could be to their system.

This was perfectly illustrated by Fulham's fluid opener after 34 minutes, which saw Zamora head in from close range after a delicate cross by Dembele, who was released into space on the right by a perfectly weighted ball from Damien Duff.

But unsurprisingly the atmosphere at Bloomfield Road was cracking and the sea of orange were almost celebrating after just four minutes when new signing Varney, fired a left-footed volley at David Stockdale, who managed to palm the ball over his bar.

But that was the only occasion that the Fulham goalkeeper, who is reportedly in line to be named in Capello's next England squad, was called into action in the first half.

Varney was popping up all over the place and he was a thorn in the side of Fulham with his ability to find space behind the visitors' midfield and a sharp eye for goal that could have been rewarded more than once.

But Blackpool were denied all three points after Etuhu's well -aken late strike, but with four points from their opening three games, Blackpool will travel to Newcastle next weekend full of confidence.

  • Wolverhampton 1-1 Newcastle United: Carroll great-header Wolverhampton Wanderers survived a Newcastle United onslaught in a bruising 1-1 Premier League draw at Molineux.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake put the hosts ahead late in the first half with a superb touch and finish but Newcastle, who were on the receiving end of a highly-physical approach from Wolves, levelled when Andy Carroll atoned for an earlier miss with a fourth goal in three Premier League matches.

Kevin Nolan missed a late sitter as the Magpies went for a winner, but Wolves held on to stay unbeaten in their first three league games of the season.

Direct was the word of the day as both sides relied largely on long balls, with Newcastle initially the more effective as they somehow failed to take a first-half lead.

Wolves’ main tactic appeared to be the targeting of Joey Barton, with Karl Henry particularly fortunate not to be booked for a series of crude challenges on the midfielder, but referee Stuart Attwell offered little protection to the much-maligned former Manchester City bad-boy.

Newcastle spurned a succession of chances, with Wayne Routledge’s ninth-minute ball inches behind Barton’s lunge, Kevin Nolan toe-poking straight at Marcus Hahnemann nine minutes later, and the same man putting a spinning volley yards over the bar after another good ball from Routledge.

Least forgivable was the 42nd-minute miss from last week’s hat-trick hero Carroll, who was otherwise a handful but somehow blasted over from eight yards when put clean through by a superb piece of skill from Nolan, who turned on a sixpence and slid a wonderful pass to the England U21 striker.

In the seconds that followed, Carroll was booked for aggressively demanding a corner - it was a clear miss and did not appear to take a touch off a Wolves player - while the home side went down the other end and scored.

The energetic Jelle van Damme bombed down the right wing from full-back and launched a high cross to the far post which Ebanks-Blake - who earlier hit the woodwork from one of David Jones’s excellent corners - trapped with an excellent first touch and fired low under Steve Harper with an equally neat second.

The second half begun in similar fashion to the first, as Henry flew into Barton - leaving him in a crumpled heap on the turf - with a needless and late barge that somehow escaped a booking.

Wolves quickly - and correctly - had a penalty appeal waved away as James Perch slid in perfectly on Matt Jarvis, although a goal kick was inexplicably awarded.

Newcastle slowly worked their way back to their early control of their game and grabbed a deserved equaliser just after the hour mark.

Jonas Gutierrez won a free-kick on the left, cynically taken out by substitute Ronald Zubar, whose first action after coming on for the injured Van Damme was to hand Barton an assist as his superb delivery was battered in off the post by the head of Carroll.

It was a stupendous header from the 21-year-old, who - after being named in England’s U21s squad - is expected to miss out on a first senior call for the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

The goal seemed to provide a springboard for Chris Hughton’s side, who were denied a second soon afterwards by the palms of Hahnemann, who saved well from Nolan after clever wide-play by Perch and Routledge.

Ward cleared off the line with Nolan set to tap in Shola Ameobi’s header as poor Barton received agricultural challenge after agricultural challenge.

It is hard to elicit sympathy for a player once jailed for a serious assault, but Barton showed remarkable composure as weak refereeing from Attwell allowed Henry to get away with merely a yellow for his umpteenth poor challenge, the final one a chest-high assault that was followed by an attempt to stamp on Alan Smith, for which the former Manchester United midfielder showed less restraint in his response.

Toon elected to match fire with fire in the latter stages as Amoebi and Perch saw yellows, as the match descended into a scrap.

Still, Nolan should have scored in the last minute of normal time, somehow putting the ball straight at Hahnemann after handed a free header by a wonderful cross from Jose Henrique.

The match petered out to a draw, leaving both sides comfortable in mid-table at this early stage of the campaign.

  • Real Madrid 2-0 Panarol: Di Maria solo-strike A magic moment from Angel Di Maria and a Van Der Vaart penalty decided a tightly contested affair tonight . Jose Mourinho's first game in front of the Bernabeu faithful resulted in a second pre-season trophy as the Madrid based club claimed a hard-won victory tonight. New signing Angel Di Maria certainly passed his test with the demanding Blancos' fans with flying colours, netting an impressive opener 20 minutes from the final whistle.

The game got off to an exciting start when moments after the first whistle a Xabi Alonso piledriver crashed into the left post with the goalkeeper beaten. Gonzalo Higuain had the ball in the net in the 6th minute, following a Sergio Canales cross, but it was rightly ruled out for an offside. Around the 20-minute mark, Penarol had four successive set-pieces situations, but all of them amounted to nothing.

With fifteen minutes before the break, the game turned from a vanity fair of individual efforts from the hosts to a horror show, starring Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos. First Ronaldo almost got into a fight with Egidio Arevalo in Penarol's penalty area, following an on-going spat throughout the first half. Then Ramos almost broke Fabian Estoyanoff's leg with a horrible tackle near the left-hand side of Real Madrid's penalty area.

The two teams withdrew with the result locked in a tie, but with Madrid certainly the team with the better chances of the first half.

Penarol started brightly after the restart, slowly picking up momentum and growing in confidence. Things turned gloomy for Fernando Gago, who was forced to leave the pitch due to injury just eight minutes after he had been brought on. Just seconds after the visitors had a goal disallowed in the 68th minute, Angel Di Maria showed us why Los Blancos paid 25 million for the Argentinian this summer when he turned Guillermo Rodriguez inside and out before coolly slotting into the left-upper corner of the net to open the scoring.

Van Der Vaart rounded off the result with a penalty for Real Madrid in injury time, after Rodriguez brought down Benzema in the penalty area. This proved to be the final moment of interest as Los Blancos marched to their second pre-season trophy.

The Spanish runner-ups open their campaign on Sunday with a match away to Mallorca, while the Uruguyan champions open their season in a week's time at home against Danubio

  • RSC Anderlecht 2-2 FK Partizan : Gillet super-strike Partizan are through to the group stage for the first time since 2003/04 after a penalty shoot-out victory.

FK Partizan survived the concession of a two-goal lead on the night to eliminate RSC Anderlecht on penalties and reach the UEFA Champions League group stage for the second time.

Cléo headed the visitors in front from a corner on the quarter-hour mark and added his and Partizan's second eight minutes after the break. Yet less than 20 minutes later the Belgian champions were level through goals by Romelu Lukaku and Guillaume Gillet. With no further scoring in regular or extra time the tie was settled by spot kicks, Partizan winning just as they did at Newcastle United FC in 2003/04 when they last reached the group stage.

Ivica Iliev whipped in a corner from the right and Brazilian striker Cléo cleverly flicked the ball beyond Silvio Proto with a deft header. The home side almost equalised five minutes later when Radiša Ilić spilled Mbark Boussoufa's dipping drive, but the ball rolled just wide. Yet it was another 15 minutes before they fashioned another opening, Matías Suárez cutting in from the right and poking his shot a metre past Ilić's right-hand post.

Anderlecht started the second half in a more determined frame of mind, however it was Partizan who doubled their lead eight minutes after the restart. Substitute Aleksandar Davidov's deep cross eluded the home defence and Cléo had the time and space to chest the ball down before knocking it beyond Proto.

Les Mauves et Blancs were soon back in it, however, when Jan Polák's curling centre was subtly headed in by Lukaku, before chances arrived at either end. First, Proto made a point-blank save to deny Nemanja Tomić and then Lukaku's miscued shot was narrowly off target. However, the home support did not have long to wait. With 20 minutes remaining Gillet picked up a pass from Lucas Biglia and rifled a beautiful dipping shot beyond Ilić from outside the box.

With chances scarce in extra time, the tie drifted towards penalties, where Suárez, Biglia and Boussoufa fired their efforts over the bar. Despite Proto saving from Mladen Krstajić and Davidov, Partizan advanced to Thursday's draw, leaving Anderlecht with the consolation of a place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.
